PWM stands for Pulse Width Modulation. A PWM solar charge controller is an electronic device placed between the solar panels (PV array) and the battery in a solar power system. Its job is to safely regulate the charging of the battery — preventing overcharge, managing current, and helping maximise battery life.

A solar charge controller is an electronic device placed between the solar panels (PV array) and the battery (or battery bank) in a solar power system. Its main jobs are:

• To regulate the voltage/current coming from the solar panels so as not to overcharge the battery.

• To protect the battery from over-discharge.

• To ensure efficient charging, sometimes with multi-stage algorithms.

• To prevent reverse flow (battery discharging back into the PV array) at night.
